Five Years Evaluated

Imego was the subject of an independent evaluation during the spring and summer of 2004, the results of which were published in a small book entitled ”Activities of Imego AB”, SOU 2004:89. To summarise, it can be stated that the investigators were extremely positive about our achievements during our first five years as well as where the company was headed. In the report, Imego is described as a research institute with close relations with academia. Besides this, the fact that we have a distinctive work practice in respect of industrycommissioned research was also highlighted. This shows that:

• Imego has an interdisciplinary approach, which encourages the development of new products and companies.
• Imego’s research activities are very successful, well planned and suited to the needs of both university research and industry as well as to other institutes in Sweden.
• Imego is appropriately staffed and organized to develop new systems and products for Swedish industry.
• Imego has developed impressive working practices, which include business models, marketing, project leadership and national and international cooperation.

We at Imego consider that:

• Distinctiveness and world class are two critical central ideas for developing a modern institute and that diversifying Swedish institutes enhances development within this sector.
• Imego holds great potential to become a new institutional model through its working practices and close cooperation with academia.
• Imego works in a precise and important area for Sweden, namely microtechnological sensor systems. By microtechnological, we mean microelectronics and micromechanics.
• Institutes of Imego’s type complement universities and technical institutions in a way that enables quicker exploitation of their research. This leads to new products and companies thereby increasing growth.
• The base grant Imego receives is decisive for its future as it allows us to continue carrying out world-class research within our areas of competence.
• The success of Imego’s interdisciplinary research laid the ground for a turnover of 60 MSEK during the institute’s first five years. Imego continues to develop business models that allow for the capitalization of research results, contributing to Sweden’s growth.
