Lab facilities at the Electromagnetic Sensor unit
The Electromagnetic Sensor unit is working with development of magnetic
and electromagnetic sensor systems. We work also with magnetic particles
and general magnetic materials, and we help external customers in
magnetic characterizing and analyzing their materials. In order to carry
out this work we have major laboratory facilities for both static and
dynamic magnetic characterization, a magnetically shielded room for low
magnetic field and low noise measurements and equipment for microwave
measurements.
In order to measure static magnetic properties we use a vibrating sample
magnetometer (VSM) from LakeShore Ltd. With this instrument we can
measure magnetization versus field (hysteresis loops, magnetization and
demagnetization curves) and magnetization versus time (measurement of
long relaxations of for instance thermally blocked magnetic
nanoparticles). The maximum magnetic field in the VSM is 2 T and with a
magnetic moment resolution of 1 nAm2.
With the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) in our magnetic lab we
can measure magnetic properties of various magnetic materials.
In order to measure dynamic magnetic properties we use a magnetic multi
instrument from Oxford Instruments Ltd. (MagLab EXA). With this
instrument we can measure magnetic dynamic properties from a few Hz up to
10 kHz (magnetic moment resolution of about 0.01 nAm2 at 1 kHz) and also
static magnetic measurements can be performed with this instrument with
fields up to 9 T (superconducting magnet and cryostat is included in the
instrument). We have also built a sensitive instrument that is able to
detect dynamic magnetic properties of general magnetic materials (powder,
liquids, solids and films) up to 250 kHz.
In the unit we also work with different applications of magnetoelastic
resonance and therefore we have built an experimental setup to detect
this resonance, where we can vary, the excitation amplitude, bias field
and excitation frequency in both pulse mode and continuous frequency
sweep.
We have also equipment for microwave measurements (for instance
reflection parameters of different materials) up to 85 GHz.
In our
magnetically
shielded room we can
carry out ultrasensitive
magnetic measurements.
In our lab we have also a magnetic shielded room where we can
achieve a shielding factor of about 1300 at DC. In this room we can
perform low magnetic field and low noise measurements for instance with
SQUIDs (Superconducting QUantum Inteference Device) or other magnetic
measurements that require low external fields.
