Military: MEMS IMUs will replace fibre optic and ring laser gyros in many traditional military applications. According to Yole’s latest market survey on inertial sensors, “World MEMS inertial sensor markets – 2005 v2”, the defence navigation market for MEMS IMUs will increase from a total market value of $1.5 billion in 2002 to $11 billion in 2008. Large new applications that have not been possible before are soldier positioning, binocular stabilization and targeting artillery and mortar shells. |
