Abstract
The present invention relates to a method for detecting changes of the magnetic response of at least one magnetic particle provided with an external layer in a carrier fluid. Themethod measures the characteristic rotation time of the magnetic particle with respect to the external layer by measuring the Brownian relaxation in the carrier fluid under the influence of an external alternating magnetic field. Modification of the effective volume of the particle or its interaction with the carrier fluid changes a hydrodynamic volume of the particle changes, which implies a change of the frequency (fmax) at which an out-of-phase component of the magnetic susceptibility has its maximum.
Development at IMEGO
We have been working on this biodetection method since 2000 together with two leading magnetic-nanoparticle manufacturing companies, Micromod and Chemicell, in order to obtain optimally biofunctionalized magnetic nanoparticles. We have been one of the leading partners in an EU project (Biodiagnostics, 04-08) that focussed on using magnetic nanoparticles as detection probes for bioanalythes. We are also collaborating with CTH on this detection method. We have an integrated instrument (DynoMag®) that can be used for this type of biodetection. We are continuing development of the optimum stable biofunctionalized magnetic nanoparticle system.
